Everyone has them (especially in black), everyone loves them, everyone is saved by them when they don’t know what to wear. I am talking about the ‘Going Out Tops’.
According to TikTok, the concept of ‘going out top’ is a very Millenial one (read old).
Whether that’s true or not, I love going out tops, especially because they have the saviour ability of getting you out of the ‘not knowing what to wear’ mess. Especially when you are already 30 mins late, Uber is there in 2 mins, you’re still in you underwear, you hate everything you own and you’re very close to a breakdown.
The Going Out Top might not be the thing that makes an outfit, nor the thing that makes you stand out as a style icon, but they get the job of making-you-feel-good-in-a moment-of-despair done. Throw on a pair of pants or jeans that look well on you, a blazer and some heels and you’re ready.
So viva the going out top - this week’s search protagonist.

Below is a list of my favorite types and brands of Going Out Tops.
I am also conscious that the perfect Going Out Top varies a lot with body shape and type - each to his own. The examples below (coming from personal experience) probably fit better broad shoulders / small chested people like me. However these brands offer a wide variety of options - worth checking them out for something you might love
8 by Yoox - literally any possible shape and colour at good prices. For the party season
The Line by K - Long sleeve, short sleeves, no sleeves. All of them. From the US so a bit difficult to buy in Europe, but easy to buy from Revolve
Woodrose deli - for the New York cool girls
Musier Paris - so many different options, very easy to find on other online retailers
Paloma Wool - very cool as usual, interesting knit tops but also summery tops
Gimaguas - this very cute pink one, or a more classic black one, to wear under a suit
Reformation - which conveniently has a ‘Going out tops’ section (Millenial founder?). Loving a velvet bustier style moment, but also a very chic sequin strappy one, if you’re into the flower brooch trend
new collab Reformation x Camille Rowe ‘for the it girls’, a lot of going out inspo
Gauge 81 - Shifted halter, strappy, sequins (Sequins and velvet are really must have this season - absolutely love them. I know, Velvet? In winter?
Groundbreaking.) Gauge81 is generally a going out out brand - in case you need inspiration. More on the expensive side, but often on sale on Farfetch or Matches
Superdown -I don’t love the aesthetic, but I really like this this bodysuit which is a bestseller on revolve (similar one from Musier paris in an older collection, you might find it on Vinted)
If you have more budget:
Christopher Esber (ideally on sale) - spider webs and cut outs
16andarlington (Ideally on sale) - a lot of sequins and feathers
Orseund Iris - I never purchased from this brand, but it has been on my radar for a long time. It is more on the expensive side and I am debating whether the quality will be worth it. Nevertheless, I really like the designs and will definitely try it at a certain point. On my wish list: the minimal frou frou, ballerina style silk top, the cropped sirena, the minimal bustier.
Jacquemus - love this backless one, this satin shirt or this long sleeved one or this white crips shirt
The majority of these brands can be found on online retailers , often on sale.
Cool things
In these boring cold days (the bad, grey, not-so-cold cold) I have been thinking a lot about getaways. In particular I have been thinking a lot about a trip I took earlier this year in the south west US, that I absolutely loved.
So I thought I’d share a couple of cool things that I purchased over the years for my more active holidays in the nature:
The Patagonia pouch: it comes in several colors, it fit so much more stuff that you would expect (it’s literally called Black Hole), it is super light and resistant.
The Patagonia fleece: A classic, super warm, full of pockets, dries quickly (it’s all synthetic..) very cool tho.
The y2k cargos dubbed as hiking pants - like all Amazon’s mysterious clothing items, they do not look like the picture at all, but they’re good. Lightweight and adjustable
The New Balance 530 - so comfortable. Nothing else to say
The Alpha Industries bomber jacket: extremely versatile, very warm, with layers it can be a proper winter jacket. Go for the men’s models in a small size, they have the perfect shape!
