#9 - The importance of being plush
Focus on Velvet, plus jewellery and ceramics from London
Ciao!
I am suuuuper excited for the holidays, and as I was thinking about my wish list, and was researching presents for my mom, I went down a plushy rabbit hole. Meaning that I got super into velvet clothing.
I find velvet (or velour? Or velveteen? Does anyone know the difference?) a bit tricky to wear (unless it’s accessories) because the risk of getting the ‘ancient curtain drapes’ / ‘1-year-old at their first Christmas’ / ‘elderly lady at their 5th husband’s funeral’ effect is relatively high.
However, after doing all the research as usual, I came to the conclusion that velvet works well and it can be easily worn in two instances: 1) if it’s a long sleeve minidress ideally with a high neck or 2) a suit (to style with nothing under and unapproachable heels).

So, this week’s research is on velvet clothing. But before we jump into that, in today’s Ugly Elevator, I won’t add any more ‘useless but beautiful’ gift ideas (I run out of ideas). I will, however, include some ideas I’ll put in my wish list, in case it might be of inspiration to anyone.
There are 2 kind of people in this world, those who do not write Santa’s letter and those who do. I do, hence the wishlist. Here is an interesting story behind the tradition of writing santa’s letter!
Finally, I brought back the ‘Other Cool Things section’, with a kind of random focus on Jewellery and ceramics from my time strolling around Notting Hill.
These Weeks’ Search
The velvet mini dress
This Rotate one was my absolute favorite. Unfortunately, it is sold out everywhere in black and in my size. However, if you have a more eccentric style than mine (and are probably more fun), the hot pink version is available with rhinestones on the nipples. IN LOVE.
Reformation has several very good alternatives, I really like this one in navy (also available in black), or this one, available in various colors. I tried it and the fit is as usual very flattering. I’d go for the black one, but depending on your palette light pink and champagne are also good options. To be worn with super light tight (8 deniers or so), or no tights for the pink and champagne versions.
Norma Kamali option, similar to reformation and another good option from House of Harlow. As usual, when it comes to dresses Revolve has plenty!
A very girlie version from Sezane, with gold rhinestones
I do not love v necks, but this ruched skirt alternative from Ganni is cute
Non long sleeve exception (but high neck!) because of the structure and the color, from GCDS
The velvet suit
Jacket and trousers from Sezane (feels like I am a bit late to the trend… it’s all sold out). However, good inspiration. I would wear it with nothing underneath or a small, shiny bralette.
Non fast fashion gets very very expensive very quickly. However, you might find some good (let’s say decent) deals in the second hand market. I have linked a burgundy Stella McCartney one, however, I’d say stay on the black here as it’ll be harder to build a suit. I’d go with a secondhand, nice jacket and Cos trousers.
…Or if you have a good tailor close by, get the pants done by them!
Gift ideas (better known as My Wishlist)
Shearling flats! I have been eyeing these since September, a whole list of alternatives here
Black patent boots like these or these. These Prada ones are my dream ones, but definitely out of budget. A whole list of options here! (have been looking at these since a while too…)
Short long haired faux fur jacket: from Hush, Free People, (If you have budget, these are great alternatives)
This shirt, or anything from Les Croissant Atelier for that matter
Black leather belt with golden buckle, such as this. Other options are 1, 2, 3
Short sleeved, fluffy jumper
Something cheetah, especially denim
Other Cool things
From my walks around London
I recently discovered a new Jewellery brand that I really like, called Daphine. Designs are very simple but unique, and can easily be worn day to night. I recently purchased these earrings, and have already work them on several occasions (from work to club).
Daphine help a pop up store in Notting Hill last weekend, and as I went to check out more of their designs, I also discovered a lovely ceramics brand called Bettina Ceramica. Their pieces take a modern twist on classic italian designs (think yellow lemons in the Amalfi coast) - tall pieces are handmade in Italy by local artisans and look just stunning.
On my way back, I spotted another jewellery pop up store. I was immediately attracted by the statement yet elegant necklaces and earrings. All pieces are made in Athens, and are coated in 18ct and 24ct gold.
